Guide Dogs for the Blind

Guide Dogs for the Blind provides highly trained guide dogs and instruction at no cost to blind and visually impaired veterans. Two-week residential training programs at California and Oregon campuses teach handlers guide dog skills orientation and mobility. Dogs trained for various environments including urban suburban and rural settings. Lifetime support includes veterinary care consultation ongoing training and successor dogs. Veterans must demonstrate white cane proficiency before acceptance. VA covers guide dog veterinary benefits and equipment through prosthetics department. Application process includes home visit skills assessment and matching with appropriate dog. Alumni support programs provide continuing education advocacy and peer connections.
